Joy pony 1 my little dashie12/19/2023 The fantasy comes to life one day and becomes an actual part of his life for many years. The narrator is depressed, he is detached from real life, and he spends his time escaping into a fantasy. It is a subversion of the wish-fulfilling "human in Equestria" type of story that is so common (and so maligned) in the fandom. It was like one of those dreams that bring something to the surface and help us sort through a difficult problem. It is an allegory of my experience with the show and the fandom. I attribute that to My Little Dashie, which is one of the first fanfics I read. But it was a much more positive experience than I had expected. In a few months, I did end up outgrowing it (although I still enjoy the show). I would look back and think "where did all that time go?" And I kind of dreaded that day because it would be the end of a fantasy that brought so much enjoyment and happiness to me. The show and the fanfics were a fantasy in which I was immersing myself.Įarly on, I knew I would one day outgrow this obsession, either when the show ended or when I simply lost interest. Then the same friend introduced me to some fanfiction, with which I became even more obsessed. I binged on it and I kept thinking about it in my daily life. What do you think? Is there even more to this minor Internet phenomenon?Ībout 4 years ago, I started watching a TV show on a recommendation from a friend. It would not overcome the almost-creepy fascination the character has for the pony. If it weren't for this long time period and the father-daughter relationship that develops because of it, this story would not have its impact. The writer avoids lulls by picking out only certain memoir-like episodes from the many years. This story maximizes that thematic gap.ġ. If Rainbow Dash had a strong relationship with a father figure, this would make so much sense. Also for fans - this story emphasizes two elements the show rarely utilizes: the girls' relationships with male figures, and their relationships with their parents. (He says of one character, “Better yet, the rumors on the internet were true her mane did smell like cotton candy.”)Ģ. These are the moments when I found myself smiling. The author surprises us with the bright spots of color that wade in from the pony world, and I think maintaining this surprise - even though it’s a fanfiction - is part of its delight. It makes the best of tantalizing bits of fandom. "I know the meme gets old, but I must say it: my heart exploded again."ģ. She's beyond the word 'lost': she is misplaced." "'Oh.' The realization strikes that she has no clue what is going on, where she is, who I am, or anything else. Despite the honest tone, some lines are brilliantly manipulative. Why is this fanfiction piece so popular? I’m not claiming to know the cultural reasons behind it, but I’d like to unpack some of the storytelling.Ĥ. After all, the story's Rainbow Dash does not have the pushy spunk of the flawed TV show character. Yet questions remain, and many fans are skeptical. The writing has the feel of a young man pouring his heart out. However, it's this simplicity that makes it work. Our hero is so wimpy he’s almost laughable, the plot is holey, and the writing is simplistic and grammatically unsavory. In the story, a young man struggles through a depressingly empty life in a washed-up city, until the day he discovers an infant pegasus in a cardboard box in the street: Rainbow Dash, straight out of the TV show.
